BIRDING, TRAILS The Bathurst Conservation Area, incorporating the Waters Meeting Nature Reserve, is one of the most attractive conservation areas in this region. It covers some 5 000 ha and, with the Kowie River as its western boundary, extends up the slopes of the river's forested east bank. The forests, consisting of many species of thorn tree and tree euphorbias, together with their inhabitants, are the main reason for setting aside this conservation area. The dense vegetation makes mammal-spotting difficult, but there are bushbuck, blue duiker, rock and tree dassies, bushpig, caracal and Cape clawless otter. Although no comprehensive birdlist is available, more than 150 bird species occur I the area; these include crowned eagle, fish eagle, Knysna lourie (turaco) and several different kingfisher species. Location: Southern part of the region; south-east o Grahamstown. Access: From Grahamstown take the R67 towards Port Alfred; at Bathurst bear right onto a graded gravel road and follow the signposts to the Horseshoe and the Waters Meeting Nature Reserve. At time of writing, the road was in poor condition. There us no charge for permits on weekdays (outside of holidays). Accommodation: Basic camping site for canoe hikers; overnight hut (14 people) for canoe-trailists. Bathurst has a hotel. Other facilities: Walking trails; 1 hiking trail about 9 km; picnic sites with fireplaces. Open: Throughout the year. Opening time: 07h00 to 17h00. , BATHURST, 6166, SOUTH AFRICA Tel: (0464) 250876 Fax:
